I have two young children, and we fled a DV relationship from their father in 2020. I left knowing we would be homeless, and we entered a local women’s shelter. We stayed there for 2 years and 4 months, when the shelter said they can no longer support us. For 6 months now, my children and I have been couch surfing, camping and house sitting. We are no closer to receiving a house in almost 3 years of being on the priority list.

It is now winter and our options are extremely limited and I would rather not camp with my children. The other woman’s shelters are at capacity and we are on the waiting list. We were given 7 days of brokered accommodation. But otherwise, there are no other services in place to help us. We are on the waiting list for Rapid Rehousing for almost 3 years.

No matter who you are or where you come from, everyone deserves a safe, decent and affordable home.

But right now, tens of thousands of Australians are homeless and hundreds of thousands are experiencing housing stress.

We’re in this mess because of decades of inaction and neglect. For years Federal Governments have been shirking responsibility, propping up speculative investors with tax-payer handouts rather than planning for and building affordable homes for all.

Australia needs 640,000 social homes and we need a plan to end the shortfall. If this Government is serious about tackling the housing crisis, they must fund a pipeline of at least 25,000 social and affordable homes each year.

Join us in calling on the Federal Government to fix the housing crisis.
