Real stories change hearts and minds

How chaotic it’s been in our Federal Parliament!

And while the Government put things on hold as the Liberal party sorted out their spill, hundreds of thousands of Australians weren’t able to put their struggles on hold – 116,000 people were still homeless each night, 189,400 people remained on waiting lists for social housing, and more than 1 in 9 households kept paying more for housing than they can afford.

Now that the dust has settled, it’s time to remind all of our leaders in Parliament that they have a job to do. They need to know about the challenges every-day Australians are facing and to hear first-hand from people like you about how broken the system is – and just how important it is that they fix it now.

If you’ve found it hard to find a safe and secure home, will you share your story with Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Opposition leader Bill Shorten and Greens leader Richard Di Natale, to remind them how crucial it is that they fix the broken housing system?

We know that more and more Australians every day are living in rental stress, paying more than they can afford in order to have a roof over their head.

But it doesn’t have to be this way – there are solutions, things that our leaders can do to fix the system.

Not sure what to say? Here are some things you could talk about to help you get started!

  • Do you pay more rent than you afford, and have to sacrifice other things in life to make sure you have a roof over your head?
  • Do you have to travel a long way to get to work, so that you can afford your home?
  • Have you experienced unfair rent rises or unreasonable landlords?
  • Have you ever had trouble trying to find a home, or had to fill out lots of application forms for lots of different rental properties?
  • Have you ever had to sleep on a friend’s couch, because you were struggling to find a place to call home?

All of these are great things for you to share with the Party Leaders – the most important thing is just to share your story.
