This Homelessness Week (August 4-10) will you email new Homelessness Minister Luke Howarth and ask the Government to start work on a bipartisan, national homelessness action plan by the end of 2019?

Every night 116,000 Australians are homelessness. Across the country, homelessness increased by 14% in just five years – and as much as 48% in some areas.

There are solutions: including more social housing and support services to address the drivers of homelessness, such as family violence, financial insecurity and poverty.

Ending homelessness is everybody’s responsibility – but we need leadership at a national level.

Dear Minister Howarth, I am writing to you during Homelessness Week because Australia is in the middle of a homelessness crisis and I’m relying on your leadership as Assistant Minister for Homelessness to fix it. Will you please announce that work will begin on a national, bipartisan, homelessness action plan by the end of this year? It’s a national disgrace that every night in our country 116,000 Australians are homeless – more people than the whole population of Toowoomba. Homelessness affects every generation, every state and territory, our cities and our country towns. That’s why it will take national leadership to solve the problem. I am relying on you as the new Assistant Minister for Homelessness to begin work on a national homelessness action plan - that addresses all the drivers of homelessness, including the desperate need for more social housing in Australia and proper support services for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Ending homelessness is everybody’s responsibility. That’s why any action plan should be bipartisan, and include input from all state and territory Premiers or Homelessness Ministers, from local government, with a lived experience of homelessness, and people working in the sector. We have a homelessness crisis in Australia. The good news is we know the solutions. We just need a plan for putting them in place. The crisis will only get worse if you wait.
