Support for home buyers

Tax breaks for property speculators are fuelling speculation and driving up prices much faster than incomes. It means thousands of Australian first home buyers are being locked out of the market or out-bid by investors, weekend after weekend.

Meet Hannah

Hannah and her partner have been saving to buy their first home for the past 18 months.

Hannah, and her partner have been saving to buy their first home for the past 18 months. They have a beautiful dog called Ned, and they’ve found it really difficult to rent with him – so now they just want the security of their own house.

She thought that they had enough saved up, so they’ve been going to house inspections and auctions, but without any success.

“We thought we had enough saved, but the prices just keep going up more and more and we just keep being outbid. We’ve given up buying in Melbourne, it’s just completely impossible, and we’re looking in Geelong – but it’s still so expensive.”

Hannah and her partner have just recently moved to Geelong, renting, while they continue to look for a house. “I’m a teacher, so I’ve been lucky to find a job down here, but my partner has to commute to Melbourne every day.”

“We’re starting to feel like it’s hopeless though, like we won’t ever be able to save enough to buy a home”

Our plan to support for first time buyers

Reset the tax system

Governments can redress the housing balance and make it work properly for people who are buying a home, not just an investment portfolio.

Take Action

By re-setting the tax system around housing, governments can redress the housing balance and make it work properly for people who are buying a home, not just an investment portfolio.

We’re calling for governments to

  • Reduce negative gearing and capital gains tax exemptions, to reset housing taxation to deliver fairer outcomes; and,
  • Use the billions the government would save by removing the tax breaks to encourage investment in the social and affordable housing Australia needs.
  • Prioritise first home-buyers over property speculators by resetting the tax system

It’s time to fix the housing system.

Fix the system

Join the campaign for a better, fairer housing system for everyone. Every Australian needs a place to call home.
